What you can do to protect yourself
Develop laryngitis when it comes to personal IDs and passwords.
Don't give anyone this information. It's that simple.
Treat passwords like sheets.
Change them regularly. Keep others guessing if they're trying to access your info.
Turn off the power.
When you're not using your computer, shut it down. Make sure you sign out of all your accounts beforehand.
Be suspicious.
If you get e-mails from companies you use, make sure the message is authentic. Only open e-mail attachments if they're from a trusted source. Don't update your personal information via an e-mail link unless you verify the actual company is sending it. Usually you'll need to initiate contact with a company to update your information, not vice versa.
Arm your machine.
Keep your computer updated with current software, security patches and virus protection. Install a firewall that will filter what's coming in so you can block unwanted visitors from contacting you or accessing your information.
